PHASES OF DRIVER’S EDUCATION:

PHASE ONE - 30 HOURS OF CLASS:

Students under 18 must complete 30 hours of in class instruction before they are able to take the permit test. Once the 30 hours of classroom is complete RAD will issue a “Blue slip”. Students will take the blue slip to the DMV as proof of course completion in order to take the permit test. Once your child passes the permit test at the DMV they can drive with someone over the age of 21.

WHAT IS THE TYPICAL CLASS LIKE? WHAT IS NEEDED?:

Monday- Friday. No weekends. 3 hours each day. Our maximum amount of students in a class is 35. Students will need a highlighter, notebook, and writing utensil for class. We provide manuals.  Usually class starts with review. The remainder of class incorporates chapter reading, worksheets, group activity, and chapter testing.

WHAT IF MY CHILD NEEDS TO MISS A DAY?:

Totally fine.Your child can come to the same day they missed in the next class session. Your child also has the option of doing an independent study on ANY day in the next session besides the very first day of class.

PHASE TWO - 6 HOURS OF BEHIND THE WHEEL:

RAD will come to your house, work or school for three separate times for a Behind-the-wheel session. We believe in spacing out the three sessions over the course of holding the permit.

PHASE 3 - THE ROAD TEST:

Option 1: Set up the road test with the DMV and take your child to the road test yourself.

Option 2: Have your child combined their 3rd lesson and road test in our car. This is an option for an extra fee that can be scheduled in advance. Please call us for more information at 651-253-7977.

  • Complete a 50 hour driving log with parent/guardian

WHAT IS THE DRIVER'S LOG:

A 50 hour logging of parent- child drive time. 15 of the hours on the log must be night-time driving. The log will be received from us on the first day of classroom. This log must be completed and signed by a parent/guardian by the time of your child's road test. The log must be presented to the examiner. Right Away Driving does not need to see the driver's log on behind the wheels. If you lose the driver's log go to the ''Links/Resources'' tab at the top of the webpage. You can print off a new one.

WHAT IS YOUR BEHIND THE WHEEL POLICY?

  •  Students need to have 1-2 months of practice driving with a parent/guardian before the 1st behind the wheel can be set up. The 1st behind the wheel should be set up immediately after the 1-2 months mark. That way we can catch any bad habits right away. Behind the wheels are set up one at a time. Do not wait the last minute to set up behind the wheels!

  •  It is required for our students to space out their behind the wheels. Students will not have all 3 behind the wheels in a week or in one month. We require at the least one month in between each behind the wheel.  A good example of how behind the wheels should be spaced out is below:

1.Jenny takes the permit class in October.

2. Jenny takes the permit test and passes.

3.Jenny practices with her parents for 1-2 months.

4.Jenny sets up her first behind the wheel for December.

5. Jenny calls back for her 2nd behind the wheel for August.

6.Jenny turns 16 years of age October 20th. Jenny calls ahead of time to set up her 3rd behind the wheel for middle of October.

7. Jenny does her 3rd behind the wheel and gets her white card. White cards are proof of completion of behind the wheel.

8. Jenny sets up her road test.

CAN MORE THAN ONE BEHIND THE WHEEL BE SET UP AT ONE TIME?: Please know and follow our behind the wheel policy.Only one behind the wheel can be set up at a time and they need to be spaced out one month apart. The only exceptions would be when we are scheduling a lesson and test; due to the DMV examination stations usually scheduling out 60+ days. Please allow extra time for testing scheduling. For standard behind the wheel lessons please see our release dates here.
